Parish History
Thane also known as ‘the city of lakes’ is the administrative headquarters of Thane district. It is surrounded by hills, including the hills of Yeoor and Parsik Hill. Initially, it was a small township surrounded by industries. Marthomites among the population who migrated to this township in search of employment joined the Mar Thoma Syrian Church in Dadar. In 1950, nine families residing in Thane joined together and formed a prayer group in this area. In December 1965 a congregation was formed and Worship and Holy Communion services commenced at St. James C.N.I. Church by Rev. Simon Abraham who then was the Vicar of Dadar Parish. As more Marthomites moved into this city, in 1973, a new independent Parish – “Mar Thoma Syrian Church, Thane” was formed. Late Rev. P.K. Koshy was our first Vicar and worship services were held at St. James C.N.I. Church.
Our present parsonage was acquired in the year 1990 and consecrated by Rt. Rev. Geevarghese Mar Theodosius Episcopa. During early 1990s opening up of green belt regions of Thane City for residential purpose and extension of city limits pushed in more population into this city. In 1993 most of our members residing in and around Wagle Estate joined the newly founded St. John’s Mar Thoma Church at Wagle Estate.
Acquisition of a piece of land, in the year 2002, admeasuring 1866 sq. mts. at Majiwade saw the blooming of our long cherished dream of having our own Church and other activities centre. On 11th January 2004, the foundation stone was laid for the construction of the Church Building by the then Diocesan Episcopa of Delhi-Mumbai Diocese, Rt. Rev. Joseph Mar Barnabas. The construction work commenced in June 2004. The first phase of Construction was completed in 2005 under the leadership of Rev. Chacko Thomas (Thalavady).
Consecration of our Church and opening it for worship was done by Rt. Rev. Joseph Mar Barnabas Episcopa and Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Mar Paulos Episcopa on 1st November 2005. On 23rd March 2006 we received conveyance of our plot in the name of Mar Thoma Syrian Church. On 9th March, 2008, the consecration of the Community Hall was done by Rt. Rev. Joseph Mar Barnabas Episcopa. On 24th February 2010 we received the Occupation Certificate of the Church Building from the Thane Municipal Corporation. Presently we have 180 families in our Parish.
